Are Laser Pointers Harmful to Cats ?

When playing with a cat laser pointer, only the cat's sight is stimulated. Unlike with other toys, smell, touch, and hearing are not used. Yet, it is also extremely important to use these senses, especially because the cat uses them naturally in the wild. In principle, toys and living conditions that imitate the cat's natural environment as closely as possible should be preferred. Only then can your cat have a lifestyle suited to it, and therefore lead a happy life.

As playing with a laser pointer does not lead to a sense of accomplishment or the capture of prey, the cat risks becoming frustrated and getting annoyed. It will then not want to stop circling and nervously scanning the floor looking for the red dot.

How can I avoid the potential dangers of the laser pointer?
Be very careful never to point the laser at your cat's eyes. In any case, the cat usually looks at the floor to find the dot, not the device itself. However, you must be cautious and handle the device with care.

Start with the laser pointer just above the floor so that the red dot and the device are in the same place and the cat understands where to focus its interest. Once the cat has seen the red dot, you can sit comfortably on the sofa and play with it.

However, one could criticize that the cat laser pointer is a convenience product that only considers the human's interests. Indeed, the owner can exercise their cat while staying on the sofa. But the experience offered by the laser pointer is very far from a real hunt in nature.

Are there harmless laser pointers for cats?
All zooplus range laser pointers have been tested and are considered non-dangerous. According to the manufacturer's indications, these lasers do not damage eyes, even if you or your cat look directly at the laser for a short moment. The low radiation reduces the risk of eye injury. Nevertheless, the user must always be aware of the risk that exists and be very careful when handling the laser pointer. Even with reduced radiation, a laser beam remains a highly focused light.

On the other hand, never buy a laser pointer from less reputable or dubious suppliers, especially abroad or on auction platforms, as they may not comply with current standards. For example, some cat laser pointers exceed up to a hundred times the authorized radiation power.

Laser pointers and cats: what alternatives exist?
Playing with a flashlight could be just as fun, without presenting the risks of the laser. Balls, cat fishing rods, and similar toys are also very amusing and, unlike light hunting, these games end in success, the prey can actually be caught, as in nature. Unfortunately, this sense of success is completely absent when searching for a laser pointer. For its mental balance, the cat needs this sense of success, to be able to say to itself "well done, you succeeded, you are a great hunter!"

Are laser pointers dangerous?
The concentrated laser beam is harmful to the eyes. Therefore, you must never look directly at the light beam and especially not let your cats look at the concentrated light, because their eyes are much more sensitive than human ones.

In addition, the focused light beam is harmful to the eyes. You must never look directly into the light beam, and even less let your cats look at it, because their eyes are much more sensitive than humans'. Indeed, it is because their eyes are more sensitive that they can see well at night. Note that the laser pointer can also be dangerous when reflected on mirror-effect surfaces like laminate floors. In the worst case, this can lead to blindness and high vet costs.

You should only play with your cat and a laser pointer if you are very skilled and careful. Otherwise, the danger would be too great for your cat as well as for you, and you risk irreparable eye injuries.

What are the arguments in favor of these toys?
If you use the laser pointer consciously and for short durations, it can be an exciting toy for your cat. However, some cats don't like this toy which is for them like a hunt without result. Laser pointers are particularly entertaining for playful cats.

However, as we have already pointed out, you must absolutely ensure that the beam does not target either your cat's eyes or yours, especially since the cat's eye is much more sensitive than the human one.

A reward to avoid frustration
Whatever happens, it is important to communicate to the cat a sense of accomplishment for having captured prey. Since the cat cannot catch the imaginary prey that is the laser pointer, you can for example reward it with a treat.

At the end of the hunt, you can direct the laser pointer to a red object, for example a cat cushion, so that the cat can "capture" it instead of the pointer, and feel the satisfaction of having caught its prey. The cat can also thus vent on it and release the energy accumulated during the hunt.
